Project summary:

Today, an estimated 60-70% of soils in the EU are (severely) degraded due to unsustainable land use practices and pollution. The SOILCRATES consortium includes 21 partners from across the quadruple helix that fully acknowledge the importance of healthy soils and wish to work together on the tasks defined by the EU Mission ‘A Soil Deal for Europe’. The ambition of SOILCRATES is to create four sustainable and dynamic Living Labs (LLs), to monitor soil health and biodiversity beyond the state-of-the-art, to enhance soil structure and health, and to increase soil literacy in society. During the project lifetime, four LLs based in the Netherlands, France, Ireland, and Spain, will be improving and monitoring the soil structure, soil life, and crop-growing conditions of mineral soils. In these LLs, stakeholders will work with the experimental sites (ESs) land managers to foster innovations and practices suited for the local context. Through co-creation and co-learning, the LLs will increase their knowledge of soils and the underlying soil processes. Special attention would be given to exploring crop diversity and vegetative cover, the application of organic soil amendments and irrigation techniques, and combining these practices at the farm level. By using various educational tools, SOILCRATES will make this knowledge available to the wider public and use it further to inform science, practices, and policy briefs to reduce pressures on soils. By the end of the project, four regional LLs would be fully sustainable and operational. The initial partnership would be enlarged with 40 sub-grantees – ESs and lighthouses (LHs) testing and demonstrating good practices developed through the project (EUR 1,600,000 budget allocated for FSTP). Collaboration will also be established with other LLs, sister projects, JRC, and EUSO. Proposed solutions are expected to spark further regional innovation, uptake of practices and monitoring solutions, and increase the impact of the project.

 Duration: 48 months – Start date 1 October 2024 – End date 30 September 2028

This innovative training program is a collaboration between the Centre for Lifelong Learning (KEDIVIM) of the Athens University of Economics and Business (AUEB), PwC Greece, Research laboratory on Socio-Economic and Environmental Sustainability (ReSEES) at AUEB and the Alliance of Excellence for Research and Innovation on Aephoria (AE4RIA), and  operates under the auspices of the United Nations Sustainable Development Solutions Network (UN SDSN), the largest global network of universities with 1800 members focused on developing scientific solutions for implementing the UN 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The course is directed by Prof. Phoebe Koundouri.

It comprises a comprehensive 36hr program for professionals, such as business executives, employees at an early career stage and all those who wish to acquire specialized knowledge on ESG criteria and SDG topics, employing both theoretical and practical principles. This program develops an expanded pool of professionals laying a strong foundation for the sustainability transition.

Participation in the International Expo 2020 Dubai in the United Arab Emirates

Prof. Phoebe Koundouri, Director of the EIT Climate-KIC Hub Greece, participated in the Greek delegation, led by the Deputy Minister of Development and Investment, Mr. Christos Dimas, at the International EXPO 2020 Dubai in the United Arab Emirates, from 22 – 24 February. The aim was to build synergies on issues related to artificial intelligence, sustainability technologies and the green transition, as well as business development in these areas.

ICRE8 (lead partner) has been presented the initial results of WP3 activities (Business & Policy support) in 3 Conferences during September 2021:

• In the online ECSA 58 Conference (“Estuarine and coastal seas in the Anthropocene” – 6-9 Sept.2021), under the topic: “Holistic approach to successful and sustainable management”, Alice Guittard has presented the work conducted within the Greek case study (Multi-Actor Lab 5): the co-development of a Business Roadmap for Land-Sea synergies in South-West Messinia with local stakeholders from rural (agricultural sector) and coastal activities (coastal tourism and fishery). Using qualitative and quantitative system thinking approaches, the work conducted allowed the co-identification of key actions to support the region sustainable and resilient future in a collaborative manner.
• Within the Approaches to land-sea interactions in the European Atlantic and beyond session on the online SIMAtlantic project Final conference (session 3b), Alice Guittard presented the COASTAL approach for analyzing land-sea interactions, using system dynamics models and participative approach. The panel discussion highlighted the pertinence of such approach and the replication opportunities. Recording of the session accessible here.
• Ebun Akinsete presented the general COASTAL system approach for the sustainable development of coastal-rural areas at the UN International Conference for Sustainable Development (Parallel Session 7D).

Following this intense dissemination activity, COASTAL partners had the pleasure to finally meet again in person during the General Assembly 2021 in Rochefort, France. INRAE team (French Charente Basin MAL 4 case study leader) welcome the core partners during four days. It was an opportunity for sharing the latest project results, and agree on the key steps and prioritize actions of the project final year (COASTAL will have a project extension of 6 months with the conference final scheduled in person in Ostend, Belgium, in October 2022). The General Assembly concluded by a field visit of the case study: from an experimental research agricultural farm to an oyster local farmer, we had an overview of the key coastal-rural challenges and opportunities of the case study. We discovered innovative local farming practice for a transition from an intensive farming system to a diversified system, and the benefit of  short supply chain including direct sell to consumers within the oyster local industry.

September Events Roundup On the occasion of the annual general debate of the 72nd United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), SDSN organized events focusing on the practicalities of implementing the Paris Climate Agreement and achieving the SDGs. The events were attended by Heads of State, UN ambassadors, industry leaders, scientists, civil society, and students.

New SDSN Networks in Action Report SDSN launched a report showcasing the array of solutions and initiatives led by our national and regional networks. The report presents each of SDSN’s 21 active networks, and includes an introductory essay on the role of universities in achieving the SDGs. The report was delivered to the Secretary-General on 17 September, 2017.

Launch of “Counting on the World” SDSN’s Thematic Research Network on Data and Statistics (TReNDS) published a new report on partnership-driven modern statistical systems. The report examines the types of data needed to achieve the SDGs, and identifies the urgent changes needed to build data architectures capable of responding to the increasing demand for high-quality, disaggregated and geo-referenced data.

New Globalization Course Launching on 30 October In this four-part mini-series from the SDG Academy, Professor Jeffrey Sachs argues that globalization is not a new-age fad – we have always been a globalized world. How Universities Can Accelerate Action on the SDGs SDSN Australia/Pacific launched a guide to help universities, higher education institutions, and academicians to fast-track their contributions towards the SDGs. Drawing on case studies from Australia, New Zealand, and the Pacific, the guide highlights the important role universities have in implementing the SDGs through their teaching, research, operations and leadership. It provides practical guidance and examples to inspire action.
