On October 19, 2023, the Ministry of Tourism of Cyprus, in partnership with the Cyprus Sustainable Tourism Association (CSTI), hosted a successful Climate Change Conference at the Filoxenia Conference Center in Nicosia. The conference centered around the theme “Is Climate Change a threat to Tourism?” and had held under the auspices of the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Mr. Nikos Christodoulides, who presented the opening address.
Professor Phoebe Koundouri delivered the keynote address entitled “Climate Neutrality and Resilience in Tourism – Planning and Strategies” , in which she highlighted, among other things, that “the carbon footprint of the industry is dominated by transportation, responsible for nearly half of the environmental impact, followed by tourist products, waste from catering, and agriculture. In this context, it is essential to transform the tourism sector with the aim of combating climate change and strengthening the resilience of tourism businesses and organizations.”
Following the keynote address, a roundtable discussion was moderated by Phoebe Koundouri, with the participation of the Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development, and Environment, the Deputy Minister of Tourism, the Commissioner for the Environment, the Presidents of the Hoteliers Association PASYXE and the Association of Travel Agents STEK, as well as the President of the Cyprus Sustainable Tourism Association.
