During the EAERE 2023 Conference in Cyprus, the Executive Committee of the EAERE Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Initiative organized a thematic session titled “Inclusion and Diversity from different dimensions – Gender, Ethnicity, Geography, and Sexual Orientation.” The session aimed to address the ongoing discussions and deliberations surrounding gender and diversity in contemporary discourse, particularly within mainstream professional circles where achieving inclusiveness remains a distant goal. The DEI committee took the initiative to bring these crucial issues to the forefront and work towards a more inclusive world, thereby fostering a better social order.
This session focused on exploring the extensive literature on Inclusion and Diversity within the field of environmental and resource economics. The agenda included presentations and discussions led by esteemed individuals:
- Welcome and introduction to DEI by the EAERE President Phoebe Koundouri (Athens University of Economics and Business and Denmark Technical University).
- Literature review of Women in Economics by Maria López Uribe (Universidad de los Andes).
- Climate change, labor, and gender inequality in South Africa presented by Soheil Shayegh (RFF-CMCC European Institute on Economics and the Environment).
- Women in Agriculture: Assessing gender-specific normative and institutional barriers to adaptation to climate change by Vijaya Gupta (National Institute of Industrial Engineering, Mumbai).
The session concluded with an open discussion on charting the way forward, focusing on incorporating diversity and encouraging inclusion. The discussion was moderated by Ebun Akinsete from the Athena Research Center, ICRE8 / UN SDSN GREECE.
