Dear colleagues and friends,

Instead of a newsletter opening note,  I decided to share with you a short opinion of mine on the way forward towards Sustainability Transition published in the June 2021 Edition of Global Energy Interconnection Information (special issue on North America pp. 55-56 link) and a short video with my assessment of the COP26.

Together with my warm wishes for a safe and creative 2022, I want to thank my talented (and expanding) team for their excellence! A team is not just a group of people that work together; a team is a group of people that trust each other, learn from each other, and have a common vision for the future. Our vision is the interdisciplinary, science-driven  and participatory-based implementation of UN Agenda 2030 and  the European Green Deal, towards a green and digital, job- based and fair future, that will leave no-one behind.

The COP26 summit brought parties together to accelerate action towards the goals of the Paris Agreement and the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change. For nearly three decades the UN has been bringing together almost every country on earth for global climate summits – called COPs – which stands for ‘Conference of the Parties’. Το άρθρο Press Release | Participation of the International Cluster for Research on Sustainability Transition at the 26th UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26) εμφανίστηκε πρώτα στο Ae4ria.

ICRE8 (lead partner) has been presented the initial results of WP3 activities (Business & Policy support) in 3 Conferences during September 2021:

• In the online ECSA 58 Conference (“Estuarine and coastal seas in the Anthropocene” – 6-9 Sept.2021), under the topic: “Holistic approach to successful and sustainable management”, Alice Guittard has presented the work conducted within the Greek case study (Multi-Actor Lab 5): the co-development of a Business Roadmap for Land-Sea synergies in South-West Messinia with local stakeholders from rural (agricultural sector) and coastal activities (coastal tourism and fishery). Using qualitative and quantitative system thinking approaches, the work conducted allowed the co-identification of key actions to support the region sustainable and resilient future in a collaborative manner.
• Within the Approaches to land-sea interactions in the European Atlantic and beyond session on the online SIMAtlantic project Final conference (session 3b), Alice Guittard presented the COASTAL approach for analyzing land-sea interactions, using system dynamics models and participative approach. The panel discussion highlighted the pertinence of such approach and the replication opportunities. Recording of the session accessible here.
• Ebun Akinsete presented the general COASTAL system approach for the sustainable development of coastal-rural areas at the UN International Conference for Sustainable Development (Parallel Session 7D).

Following this intense dissemination activity, COASTAL partners had the pleasure to finally meet again in person during the General Assembly 2021 in Rochefort, France. INRAE team (French Charente Basin MAL 4 case study leader) welcome the core partners during four days. It was an opportunity for sharing the latest project results, and agree on the key steps and prioritize actions of the project final year (COASTAL will have a project extension of 6 months with the conference final scheduled in person in Ostend, Belgium, in October 2022). The General Assembly concluded by a field visit of the case study: from an experimental research agricultural farm to an oyster local farmer, we had an overview of the key coastal-rural challenges and opportunities of the case study. We discovered innovative local farming practice for a transition from an intensive farming system to a diversified system, and the benefit of  short supply chain including direct sell to consumers within the oyster local industry.

“COVID 19 pandemic-related recovery packages are financed by national debt, which means that they are loans from the future generations. This points to a moral responsibility of the current generation, for “Building back Better” by investing, beyond fiscal stimulus, in transformative public investments, which will trigger the exponential systemic change needed, while leveraging private sector investment, to face the climate crisis, the economic crisis and the health crisis and enable a transformative green and digital, job-based and fair recovery from COVID-19 Pandemic, which will be co-designed by all relevant stakeholders: politicians, policy-makers, researchers, innovators, technology developers, businesses, NGOs and the civil society.

The good news is that there is, in addition to a moral obligation, an economic case for “Building Back Better”. Recent simulations of the effect of green recovery plans worldwide confirm that a green economic stimulus is more growth-enhancing than a ‘return-to-normal’ stimulus that would merely boost the unsustainable current consumption and production patterns. Cleaning unsustainable supply chains and production processes that lead to deforestation and biodiversity threats, can help reduce the risk of future zoonotic diseases and pandemics. Investing in climate resilience reduces the risk of extreme weather events and poverty for hundreds of millions of people.

The United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres, in his recent special address on “The State of the Planet” (12 December 2020), underlined that the main drivers for a trans-formative recovery are (1) global climate neutrality by 2050 (including technological advances, circular economy and nature-based solutions) (2) Sustainable Finance and (3) Climate Adaptation and Resilience. The 2030 Agenda and the Paris Agreement provide the long-term vision and blueprints for developing the transformation pathways. The European Green Deal provides the right level of ambition and direction and where efforts have been made to align the investment framework for a green and digital recovery.

In this respect, ensuring a successful biodiversity COP in Kunming, a climate COP in Glasgow and the World Food Summit in Copenhagen is essential for coordinated actions on climate and biodiversity. Combined with other annual meetings (UNGA, G20, HLPF etc.) these can make 2021 the “super year for nature and climate” and can set the foundation for long-term international cooperation on the transformative change that integrates the environment.

During 2020, our “Cluster on Sustainability Transition”, composed of 90 researchers, coordinated and/or participated in 30 national, European, and global projects, won one ERC (European Research Council) and three new Horizon 2020 projects, published 1 book and 30 peer reviewed scientific publications, organised/co-organized/participated in 133 international and national events, and most importantly collaborated worldwide with more than 400 scientific and innovation institutions, hundreds of businesses and more than 40 governments, aiming at enabling of the needed transformative change for a sustainable recovery”
