To close the loop of the COASTAL stakeholder engagement cycle, the Greek Multi Actor Lab (South West Messinia), organized a final stakeholder workshop in Costa Navarino (Romanos, Messinia). The COASTAL team presented the final version of the local land-sea System Dynamic model, illustrated by different scenarios depending on specific policy measures. Stakeholders were invited to express their perceptions on future positive and negative trends within a scenario “business-as-usual”. The second part of the workshop was dedicated to the co-design of the COASTAL business roadmap. Short-mid-long terms actions already identified were presented, stakeholders were invited one more time to contribute. The final part was dedicate to the business idea of a public-private partnership for environmental management and eco-tourism, the discussion was based  on a SWOT analysis format. Interestingly, the participant focused on the strength and opportunities of the present group to move forward together and collaborate towards a common goal. Unlike at the beginning of the project where the discussions were focusing on the problems, challenges, difficulties even when it was time to define a common desire future, the mind set has now shifted toward positive thinking and believes in collaborative process. The COASTAL approach has thus fulfill its objective of increasing coastal-rural collaboration through system thinking combining quantitative and qualitative methods. Abstract: The goal of the COASTAL project is to formulate and evaluate business solutions and policy recommendations aimed at improving the coastal-rural synergy to foster rural and coastal development while preserving the environment. Rural development in the EU is increasingly affected by changing market developments, decreasing population densities, urban sprawl, lack of employment, desertification and other environmental, economic and social pressures. On the other hand, coastal areas provide interesting business opportunities but are also influenced by economic activities in the hinterland. Multi-Actor Approaches will be combined with System Dynamics to analyse the environmental, economic, and social interactions of rural and coastal areas in a holistic manner. The underlying feedback structures governing the dynamics, vulnerabilities, limitations, and business opportunities of the land-sea system will be identified and analysed, taking into consideration the regulatory frameworks, stakeholder priorities and socialeconomic conditions at the local, regional and macro-regional scale levels. Multi-Actor Labs using qualitative and quantitative tools will be set up to support the co-creation exchanges between scientific experts, stakeholders, business entrepreneurs, sector- and administrative representatives. The project will be structured around six closely interacting work packages with six complementary case studies in Sweden, Belgium, France, Spain, Greece and Romania.

The Start-up Journey

The journey to an investible and scalable startup takes you through three stages, each with a special focus.

The first stage of the Accelerator is intended to help early-stage Startups refine and develop their specific USP and business model. Here the first prototype can be finalised and assistance is provided to obtain industry feedback. Startups at this stage will receive support services and grants up to 10,000 EUR.

Stage 1: Business Model Development

Stage 2: Business Model Validation & First Customers

The second stage of the Accelerator builds on the first stage and helps move startups with a well-formulated business model to the next phase: validation and customer acquisition. Here again startups have access to grants and services but also funds to cover other materials that are required to help develop the business. Teams can now focus on acquiring their first customers and an iterative process of business model validation whilst receiving continuing support from expert coaches and mentors and participating in programme activities and workshops. Startups at this stage will receive support services and grants up to 15,000 EUR.

Stage 3: Onwards to Investment and Scaling

The third and final stage of the Accelerator aims to prepare fully-fledged startups for a future of investment rounds and scaling. Teams get continued access to workshops, trainings, coaching and mentoring. Startups in this stage of the programme are supported in preparation for negotiations with potential investors and partners and can tap into a network of investor contacts and partners.

Startups at this stage can receive support services and grants up to 50,000 EUR.

The CD-LINKS project is launching a Summer School aimed at providing advanced training for young international scholars on integrated assessment models.

The CD-LINKS Summer School will be organized in cooperation with the Euro-Mediterranean Center on Climate Change (CMCC) and the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA), and will take place in Venice, at the Palazzo Artigianelli, from 30th June to 6th July 2019.

As environmental policy-making becomes increasingly informed by model simulations, it becomes crucial for researchers involved in this science-to-policy dialogue to obtain a basic understanding of how such models work, how they are developed and how to interpret their output.

Objectives

The objective of the summer school is to create a community of young scholars from a broad range of disciplines, ranging from environmental and natural resource economists to energy engineers, physicists, system analyst and environmental scientists, interested in the topic of modelling human activities and the earth system in an integrated framework, commonly referred to as Integrated Assessment Modelling.

The school will cover the process of modelling the interaction between economic activities and the energy system, land use, forest and agriculture, water, and atmosphere, and whether and how these multi-dimensional implications could be aggregated or traded-off.

• History of the integrated assessment modelling of human activities and the earth system
• Past socio-demographic trends and implications for energy: future major trends
• Overview of land use, agriculture and food
• Overview of the modelling of impacts of climate change
• Modelling SDGs: The expansion of IAMs and bringing everything back together

Two teaching modules and discussion of students’ presentations are scheduled each day, Monday to Friday (the room will be reserved until Saturday, 6th July, morning):

Target

Graduate students and professionals from any university, research institute, or other organization (private companies, government agencies, NGOs) with an interest in environmental issues, integrated assessment modelling and an ability to read and write fluently in English.

For applicants from academia, preference will be given to candidates who are enrolled in a Phd program or have received a PhD a maximum of 5 years ago. For all other applicants (e.g. from policy institutions, NGOs, businesses), the preference is to attract candidates who have a maximum of 5 years of experience in their field of expertise.

The maximum number of students is 30.

The Centre for Advanced Studies in Tourism at the University of Bologna (Italy), Rimini Campus, is looking for candidates for a two-year Post-Doc position. Applicants should hold a recent PhD in Economics or Statistics (or related fields) or be close to finishing their thesis. The ideal candidate should be interested and/or have some research experience in areas of applied economics, with particular reference to environmental and/or tourism economics. Publications in these fields would be an advantage. Strong attitude towards applied research, good knowledge of micro and macro econometrics and expertise in the use of statistical software (R, STATA) are required. Good knowledge of Academic English (written andspoken) is necessary. Knowledge of data scraping techniques and computer programming (e.g. Python) would be an advantage. The candidate will be working on Work Package 5 and Work Package 6 of the H2020 project ““SOCLIMPACT – Downscaling climate impacts and decarbonisation pathways in EU islands, and enhancing socioeconomic and non-market evaluation of Climate Change for Europe, for 2050 and beyond”, an international partnership of 24 Institutions led by the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (further information on the project is available at soclimpact.org). Within SOCLIMPACT, the main goal of these work packages is to estimate the socio-economic impact of climate change, with particular reference to marine and coastal ecosystems (inputs for Blue Economy sectors), in the European islands.

The successful candidate will be working with the team of researchers involved in SOCLIMPACT project and will participate to the normal activities of the Centre for Advanced Studies in Tourism and of the other departments involved in the project (Department of Statistics, Department of Economics). The position will start on September, 2018. The gross salary will be of € 25,000 per year, including social security contributions but tax-free (the net salary will be around € 20,000).

Το έργο STEAM (http://www.steamsummerschool.eu/)  επιδιώκει τη βελτίωση της ευαισθητοποίησης σε επιστημονικά θέματα και φιλοδοξεί να συμβάλει στην ανάπτυξη απόψεων από ενημερωμένους ανθρώπους, να αυξήσει την εμπλοκή φοιτητών και μαθητών στο «STEM» (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) ώστε να ακολουθήσουν σχετικές σταδιοδρομίες, την τόνωση της κοινωνικοοικονομικής ευημερίας των χωρών εταίρων και να ενισχύσει τις μεταβιβάσιμες δεξιότητες των σημερινών ερευνητών.
