WAAS Talk webinar on Implementing Human Security: Measurement and Tools

On 13th June, the webinar titled “Implementing Human Security: Measurement and Tools” was held in support of HS4A, a global campaign initiated by the United Nations Trust Fund for Human Security in partnership with the World Academy of Art & Science. The primary objective of this webinar was to foster open discussions, exchange best practices, and share knowledge, aiming to explore innovative, evidence-based approaches to Human Security.

The COVID-19 pandemic and the rapidly approaching climate crisis highlight the need for a new approach to security that transcends the narrow limits of the conventional focus on military preparedness. The IAP statement will focus on the need for a comprehensive, transdisciplinary approach to research, education and implementation of activities related to Human Security.

Human Security, as defined by the UN, integrates all dimensions of security – economic, food, health, environmental, community, personal, and political, including issues such as cybersecurity and AI – and all 17 SDGs. It is a human-centered approach that integrates research, policy-making, prevention, implementation and community involvement. In addition, it is formulated in a manner that can appeal to the broad general population and build public support for more serious attention to local, national and global challenges that threaten the security of people everywhere. All of humanity has a stake in Human Security.

Human Security involves all stakeholders – multilateral institutions, national governments, local communities, scientific research institutions, universities, businesses, the entire range of civil society organizations and individual citizens around the world. It has relevance to the way research problems are formulated, research programs are conducted, disciplines related and interact with one another, findings and recommendations are framed and presented to decision-makers, and applied at all levels.

The panelists for the webinar included:

  1. Moderator: Prof. Phoebe Koundouri: Chair, SDSN Global Climate Hub; Co-Chair, SDSN Europe; Professor, Athens University of Economics & Business
  2. Garry Jacobs: President and CEO, World Academy of Art & Science
  3. Prof. Jeffrey Sachs: President, UNSDSN; Director, Center for Sustainable Development, Columbia University
  4. Prof. Adrian Bejan: Professor of Mechanical Engineering, Duke University
  5. Prof. Eden Mamut: Director, Black Sea Universities Network; Professor, Ovidius University

By promoting evidence-based approaches and fostering collaborative efforts, participants worked together to identify new directions and strengthen the concept of Human Security, enhancing its practical implementation on a global scale.
