As an elected-fellow of the World Academy of Art and Science (WAAS), Prof. Koundouri participated at the WAAS@60 Conference – A Planetary Moment on 15/2 in a discussion on “Why WAAS? – Inventing the Future” and on 17/2 on “Leadership for Planetary Momentum”
In her speech she focused on the need to design a post-COVID era to align with the SDGs and the Paris Agreement. Public investments should be oriented toward sustainable industries and the digital economy and should spur complementary private investments. A major goal of the recovery should be an unprecedented commitment to reskilling and upskilling people, including the skills to prepare workers for the green (renewables, nature-based solutions and circular economy) digital economy. WAAS has a central leadership role to play in the relevant interdisciplinary capacity building for all stakeholders: researchers and scientists, politicians, policy-makers, businesses, financial institutions, civil society and most importantly the youth!
