IMPETUS project: Understanding and Addressing the Wildfire and Flood Threat in Greece and Beyond

Countries such as #Greece are experiencing tropical weather. In the past years, the country had to face numerous wildfires, but also floods, which resulted in huge land loss, economical damage, and lost lives. The Greek government is introducing new climate laws, which aim at mitigation and adaptation, including reaching carbon neutrality by 2050, transitioning to renewable energy sources by 2030 and reducing greenhouse gasses.

However, information about the population at risk is unavailable throughout Europe. For this reason, IMPETUS is developing a ‘Hot-spot Identification and Prioritisation Service’, a tool that will allow researchers to locate areas that are at a higher risk, and it will combine climate data with satellite information on population.

The IMPETUS Hotspot Explorer is a mapping tool that allows you to identify the critical issues at each location, matched against the anticipated stresses from climate so that you can prioritise the public discourse and prioritise adaptation policies for these hotspots to be able to have meaningful change on the ground.

IMPETUS project: Turning Climate Commitments into Action

Climate change already threatens our way of life, with severe impacts on people’s health and wellbeing as well as on livelihoods and assets. Temperatures have repeatedly broken long-term records recently. The years 2015-2020 were then the hottest on record, with heatwaves, droughts and wildfires across Europe.

Recent projections estimate global warming of up to 4°C under current climate policies. Even stopping all greenhouse gas emissions would not prevent the climate impacts that are already occurring, which are likely to continue for decades.

This accelerating pace of climate change impacts shows just how important the EU’s adaptation strategy is. It is a key priority under the European Green Deal and recognises adaptation as a crucial component of the long-term global response to climate change.

The IMPETUS project will accelerate Europe’s climate change response by developing innovative measures to make its regions more resilient. Both technical and non-technical innovations are in development, tailored to overcome specific challenges in each European biogeographical region and ensure wider business, government and society are prepared to meet the challenges ahead!

We need to work together to help communities, businesses and regions be more resilient.

As many Europeans head to the beaches this summer, coastal erosion remains a significant threat to shorelines worldwide. The removal of soil and sand by wind, water, and human activity has left several European coastal areas vulnerable to flooding and extreme tides, endangering both human and marine life. In a new video, we explore how IMPETUS partners in Spain successfully restored dunes in the region, offering a sustainable approach to protecting beaches in coastal Catalonia.

Global predictions suggest that 50% of the world’s beaches could vanish by the century’s end. The Catalan coast, affected by port and dam construction, faces severe erosion as natural sediment flows are blocked. Traditional sand replenishment methods are unsustainable and costly, highlighting the need for long-term, eco-friendly solutions.

Sand Traps in Sant Pere Pescador: A Success Story Sant Pere Pescador exemplifies effective dune restoration. Carla Garcia-Lozano from the University of Girona reports the beach has narrowed by 50 meters over 50 years due to erosion. In response, the Government of Catalonia and Costa Brava’s Natural Park, with local support, began a beach-dune restoration project.

In 2020, cane fences were installed to trap sand, increasing dune height and volume. IMPETUS researchers have used drones since 2021 to monitor changes, showing a 40% increase in dune height over three years. Frederic Suñe Tobella, owner of Campsite Las Dunas, notes that maintained dunes protected their property during Storm Gloria in 2020, showcasing their climate resilience.

Expanding to Urban Areas: Calafell Building on rural success, the IMPETUS project now aims to apply these techniques in urban areas, starting with Calafell. This city, part of a region with 43% of Catalonia’s population, has replaced natural dunes with promenades and buildings. Aron Marcos Fernández, Calafell’s Councilor for Environment, emphasizes the beach’s critical role in tourism.

The city council removed parts of the promenade to allow natural sand deposits. Xavier Roig Munar, Manager of beach-dune systems, reports that sand traps in Calafell have effectively reshaped the beach to withstand storms.

Nature-Based Solutions for Coastal Protection These initiatives highlight the importance of natural solutions for coastal protection. While short-term measures like elevated homes and dike walls offer immediate relief, dune restoration provides a sustainable, long-term strategy. The IMPETUS project’s precise measurements and positive results offer a valuable model for coastal communities worldwide.

As sea levels rise and storms intensify, Catalonia’s dune restoration approach demonstrates how nature-based solutions can protect and sustain beaches for the future.

BRIGAID CONNECT | Innovation for Resilience

Climate-related disasters are already impacting Europe from north to south, east to west. In 2016, these disasters caused more than €20 billion of damages across Europe – and these impacts will grow as our climate continues to change. This will place a huge burden on Europe’s environment, society and economy – we need to rethink our systems and find innovative ways to adapt to this new reality. We urgently need innovators who can not only generate great ideas, but who can bring them to life; increasing our safety, creating jobs, strengthening Europe’s global competitiveness and improving our quality of life along the way.

This is why in 2016 we embarked on BRIGAID: a four-year EU funded project to accelerate the development and spread of innovations in climate resilience.

Our aim: to find and help innovators turn their climate adaptation ideas into real solutions. But we can’t stop now! We now need to consolidate what BRIGAID achieved and turn it into a thriving, Europe-wide ecosystem for climate adaptation innovations.

At Brigaid Connect we provide concrete help to innovators by: – Finding funding, experts, and test facilities to improve their new climate adaptation innovations; – Providing business strategy training over web-based tools; – and by offering communication and marketing support to help innovators grow their business.

BRIGAID Connect Association, , is a research driven incubator that turns innovation ideas into real climate adaptation solutions. BRIGAID Connect is a solution provider for the ambitious climate adaptation strategy. This Association is the outcome of an EU-funded project “BRIGAID: Bridging the gap for Innovations in Disaster Resilience” (2016-2020) and engages over 120 climate adaptation innovations in an advanced stage of development. The project evaluated 125 innovations from across Europe, selecting 40 of them to participate in a collaborative technical readiness assessment, and accompanying 26 more through its market readiness programme.
