Evans Steve

Professor Steve Evans, MAE, FIET, FLSW, FIEMA, FRSA, CEng is Research Professor in Industrial Sustainability at the University of Cambridge. After 12 years in industry Steve moved to academia and pioneered many new topics in sustainable business models, eco-efficiency and other topics within industrial sustainability. His research asks ‘how to deliver a sustainable industrial system at the speed and scale that the planet needs?’ and is conducted with leading practitioners such as Toyota, Chanel, Airbus and 100’s of other companies. He started his first research on Circular Economy in 1995. Steve has founded various cleantech start-ups and served as Special Advisor to the UK House of Lords. He is also a Professor at the Royal College of Art and Cranfield School of Management. Steve was elected to serve on the Board of Academia Europaea.

Mashayek Ali

Professor Ali Mashayek is a professor in the Department of Earth Sciences at the University of Cambridge where he leads the Modelling Ocean Dynamics & Ecosystems Lab (MODEL) and co-directs the AI for Environmental Risks (AI4ER) Centre for Doctoral Training. He is also cross-affiliated with the UK National Oceanography Centre. Ali has degrees in mechanical engineering and physics and has worked in environmental engineering, earth sciences and climate science over the past decade. He works closely with the industry on topics such as carbon dioxide removal technologies, risks associated with climatic/environmental extreme events, and marine biodiversity.

Previous positions: Assistant Professor at Imperial College London (2018-2023); NERC Research Fellow at the University of Oxford (2017-2018); Research Associate at Scripps Institution of Oceanography (2016-2017); Research Fellow at MIT (2013-2016); PhD in Physics from University of Toronto (2008-2013)

Nisiforou Olympia

Dr. Olympia Nisiforou serves as an Assistant Professor at the Cyprus University of Technology, within the Department of Shipping under the Faculty of Management and Economics. She is certified in Quantitative Risk Management and Circular Economy and Sustainability Strategies from Judge Business School Executive Education, Cambridge, UK. Dr. Nisiforou holds a Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Marine Science/Oceanography, a Bachelor of Science in Sustainable Maritime Operations, a Master of Science (Hons) in Learning in Natural Sciences, another Master of Science (Hons) in Environmental Pollution Control, and a PhD from the Department of Environmental Science and Technology, specializing in pollution monitoring and control and renewable energy. She received a prestigious scholarship (0311/21 PENEK) from the Research Promotion Foundation for her doctoral dissertation. Throughout her academic journey, Dr. Nisiforou has received numerous awards and competitive scholarships for academic excellence. Notably, she secured first place globally in the 2010/2011 UNESCO Fellowships Program for Program Priorities and has been recognized by institutions such as the Bank of Piraeus and Hellenic Bank Professionally, Dr. Nisiforou has extensive experience in multidisciplinary technical and research operations, both locally and internationally. She has served as both a principal investigator and contributor to a diverse array of projects, ranging from fundamental to applied research. Over the years, she has co-authored more than 15 successful research proposals, securing funding from various sources, including the European Union and national bodies.

Zanuttigh Barbara

Barbara Zanuttigh is Associate Professor of Hydraulics at the University of Bologna since 2014. She holds a PhD in Hydraulic Engineering from the Polytechnic of Milan and more than 20-years post-doctoral experience in the field of coastal structures and marine renewables.

She has carried out the research in cooperation with many Universities and Research Institutes, developing good team-working skills and a strong enthusiasm for interdisciplinary topics, specifically for the new research frontiers of marine renewable energy, including multi-use offf-shore platforms, and coastal flood defence strategies such as eco-friendly and cost-effective measures, including both technological and non-technological solutions.

Author of more than 150 papers, h-index: 30 (scopus).

Editor-in-Chief of Coastal and Off-shore Engineering Journal, Frontiers of Built Environment; Associate Editor of the Journal of Off-shore Mechanics and Arctic Engineering, ASME; Member of the Editorial Board of Scientific Reports, Nature, and of Renewables and Sustainable Energy Reviews, Elsevier.

Coordinator/ Scientific Responsible of Research Projects, the most relevant being FP7 THESEUS “Innovative technologies for safer European coasts in a changing climate”, FP7 MERMAID, “Innovative multi-purpose off-shore platforms: planning, design and operation”, H2020 Programme BRIGAID”Bridging the Gap for Innovations in Disaster Resilience” .

Zachariadis Theodoros

Theodoros Zachariadis is a tenured Associate Professor at the Energy, Environment and Water Research Centre of the Cyprus Institute. In 2009-2020 he served as an Assistant and then Associate Professor of environmental policy and energy resource management at the Cyprus University of Technology. In 2015-2020 he was the Dean of the University’s Faculty of Geotechnical Sciences and Environmental Management. He holds a Diploma and a Doctorate in Mechanical Engineering from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece.

He has worked as a researcher at the National Technical University of Athens and as a European Marie Curie Fellow at the Economics Research Centre of the University of Cyprus. He is a member of the Scientific Committee of the European Environment Agency, a Visiting Professor at Aarhus University, Denmark, a Manager at the European branch of the United Nations Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN Europe) and an associate editor of the international Journal “Energy Economics”. He is also a member of the Leadership Council of SDSN Cyprus and served as a Board member of Green Budget Europe, a Brussels-based expert platform promoting environmental fiscal reforms.

During the last years, he has been listed in the top 2% of academics globally in the field of Energy. He is the recipient of the 2009 Research Prize of the Republic of Cyprus and the 2019 Environmental Prize awarded by the President of the Republic of Cyprus. His research interests are on the techno-economic analysis of energy, environmental and transport policies, with a special interest in environmental taxation.

Yusuf Anshory

Arief Anshory Yusuf is Professor of Economics at the Department of Economics, Padjadjaran University, Indonesia, Visiting Professor at Department of International Development of King’s College London, Honorary Senior Lecturer at Crawford School of Public Policy of the Australian National University and a Non-resident Senior Research Fellow at United Nations University World Institute for Development Economics Research (UNU-WIDER). He received his Bachelor in Economics from Padjadjaran University, MSc from University College London, and PhD from the Australian National University.

His research focuses on the economic development, particularly on poverty and inequality as well as on the interlinkage between economy and the environment. He is also well-known for his expertise in economic modeling particularly computable general equilibrium (CGE) modeling.

He is Founding Director of the Center for Sustainable Development Goals Studies (SDGs Center) of Padjajaran University. He is also Director of the Economy and Environment Institute Indonesia (EEI-Indonesia), a part of the wider network of Economy and Environment Program of Southeast Asia (EEPSEA), an organization that works on the research capacity-building for environmental economics in the region. He has been consultant to various organization such as ADB, UNESCAP, OECD, the World Bank, IDRC as well as advisor to various Indonesian government agencies. Prof. Yusuf is on the editorial board of Bulletin of Indonesian Economic Studies (BIES), a member of the Indonesian Young Academy of Science (ALMI) and the current President of Indonesian Regional Science Association (IRSA).

Xenarios Stefanos

Stefanos is an environmental economist by training with a focus on water resources and climate change aspects. He initially acquired a 3-years of postdoctoral experience in India and Ethiopia as a staff member of the International Water Management Institute (IWMI). Subsequently, Stefanos did research on climate change and agriculture in South Asia, based at the Norwegian Institute of Bioeconomy (NIBIO), and worked as Head of the Water and Energy Security Unit at the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) Office in Tajikistan.

He further became a Senior Researcher in the University of Central Asia in Kyrgyzstan leading activities on water-energy-food and environment nexus in the region while in May 2018 he was appointed as Associate Professor in the Graduate School of Public Policy in Nazarbayev University based in Kazakhstan.

Since January 2020 he has been an Adjunct Senior Research Fellow in the Institute of Water Policy, at the National University of Singapore. He is in the Editorial Board of the International Journal of Water Resources Development, Hydrology Research Journal, World Development Sustainability, and the Central Asian Journal of Water Research, while he is in the Management Board of the International Water Association’s Specialist Group on Statistics and Economics.

Kerry Smith is emeritus professor of environmental economics at the W.P. Carey School of Business at ASU. He directs the Center for Environmental Economics and Sustainability Policy in the L. William Seidman Research Institute, which serves as a link between the local, national and international business communities and the W.P. Carey School of Business. He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and a university fellow at Resources for the Future, a nonprofit think tank based in Washington, D.C.. He is also a fellow of the Association of Environmental and Resource Economists, and of the American Agricultural Economics Association. Smith came to ASU from North Carolina State, where he was a University Distinguished Professor and the Director of the Center for Environmental and Resource Economic Policy.

Dr. Roumasset’s primary areas of research stem an NSF grant on energy substitution and sustainable development, the ERS/USDA PREISM program and a number of USGS grants on the sustainable development and conservation of water resources. He has previously held positions at UC Davis, the University of the Philippines, ANU, Yale, the University of Maryland, the International Rice Research Institute, and the World Bank, where he worked as a long-term consultant on irrigation economics. He has served on the Board of Directors of the Western Economic Association International and the editorial boards of the American Journal of Agricultural Economics, Contemporary Economic Policy, Asian Journal of Agriculture and Development, Asian Journal of Agricultural Economics, and SE Asian Journal of Agricultural Economics. His publications and extramural grants during the last 10 years have focused on developing new methods for policy analysis for resource and environmental management problems in Hawaii and the Asia-Pacific Region and promoting new connections both between and within disciplines via sustainability science. He has also published widely on agricultural development, transaction cost economics, risk and decision-making, and the nature, causes and consequences of public policy.
