Dr. Panagiotis Gkorezis

Head of Research & Development in the Environmental Microbiology Unit of the Belgian company PSMT and External Adjunct Scientist at Hasselt University.

Dr. P. Gkorezis obtained his Bachelor Degree as an Agronomist from the Faculty of Agriculture, Forestry and Natural Environment, Department of Agriculture at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki Greece in 2002. During his BSc Thesis worked on the “Genetic breeding in sugar beet” supervised by Professor of Genetics M. Koutsika–Sotiriou. He continued his postgraduate studies at the University of Ioannina to obtain his Master of Science degree on “Quality Agricultural Product Certification” in 2007, following an Interdepartmental Postgraduate Study Programme between the Department of Business Administration of Food and Agricultural Products, the Department of Environmental and Natural Resources Management and the School of Medicine of University of Ioannina. His MSc Thesis title was: “Elective uptake of metals by plant-species indexes and its perspectives to environmental health” and was carried out under the supervision of Professor V. Kalfakakou at the Laboratory of Environmental Physiology, School of Medicine, University of Ioannina.

He then moved on to Belgium to continue for his Doctoral studies, obtaining valuable experience and training in Environmental Microbiology in the Center of Environmental Sciences at the Hasselt University (Belgium). He defended his PhD Thesis on 2014 titled “Diesel degradation triggered by plant-associated bacteria” under the supervision of Professor Jaco Vangronsveld.

After his Doctoral studies he collaborates with Hasselt University as an external Adjunct Scientist (www.uhasselt.be/cmk-en). In parallel he is the Head of Research & Development in the Environmental Microbiology Unit of the Belgian company PSMT (www.psmt.be), specialized in the remediation of soils and groundwater contaminated with various petroleum hydrocarbons.

Dr Gkorezis has co-authored 3 book chapters, 7 referred Journal publications and 6 Genome Announcements around Soil Science and the Physiology and Genetics of Plant and Microbial Remediation. He has been an invited speaker and presented his research work to various International Conferences in Europe, USA, Canada and Brazil.
