Garry Jacobs Visits Athens: Advancing WAAS-Europe and Strengthening Global Collaboration

Garry Jacobs, President and CEO of the World Academy of Art and Science (WAAS), visited Athens for discussions on ongoing collaborations, future initiatives, and the shared vision for addressing the world’s most pressing challenges.

A key highlight of the visit was the discussion on the establishment of WAAS-Europe, the European branch of WAAS. This initiative—led by Professor Dr. Phoebe Koundouri, Fellow and Trustee of WAAS, and hosted by the AE4RIA (Athens University of Economics and Business and Athena Research Center)—is envisioned as a vibrant regional hub that will:

  • Strengthen European engagement with WAAS’s global mission

  • Foster dialogue across science, arts, policy, and society

  • Advance interdisciplinary research and innovation

  • Contribute to sustainable solutions for peace, governance, and human wellbeing

Founded in 1960 by eminent leaders including Albert Einstein, Bertrand Russell, Robert Oppenheimer, and Joseph Needham, the World Academy of Art and Science was established as a transdisciplinary forum to address humanity’s greatest challenges. Today, WAAS unites more than 800 fellows from over 90 countries—spanning science, the arts, education, governance, and innovation—and continues to pioneer global initiatives in sustainability, human security, education, and governance.
