Prof. Phoebe Koundouri delivered the keynote speech at the World Green Economy Organization (WGEO) Pavilion, as part of the session “Mobilizing Science and Technological Innovation: Enhancing Climate Resilience,” co-hosted by WGEO and the UN Climate Change Global Innovation Hub.
Drawing from the Europe Sustainable Development Report 2023/24 by the Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN), which she co-authored, Prof. Koundouri shared insights on leveraging science and innovation to accelerate the implementation of the UN Climate Convention and the Paris Agreement. The report emphasizes the urgent need for decisive EU actions to prevent irreversible environmental damage and address social tipping points—critical for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the objectives of the Paris Agreement.

The session, moderated by Stephan Kuster, Head of External Affairs at Frontiers, included contributions from Adrian Martinez Blanco, Director of the Climate Route Association in Costa Rica; Nura Jibo, CEO and Founder of the African Climate Change Research Centre (ACCREC) in Nigeria; and Venkata Subbarao Chunduru, Director at IBI Group Arcadis. Panelists highlighted the vital role of collaboration and innovation in addressing the climate crisis.
