RACC16 Statement: Oceans in Crisis – Impacts and Responses

Session Overview:

This session will convene a critical dialogue on the state of global marine ecosystems and the escalating threats they face. Key topics will include the impacts of saline ingress and rising sea levels, declining fishery yields, and challenges across the blue economy. Special attention will be given to vulnerable coastal communities, particularly in the Global South and Small Island Developing States (SIDS), which are disproportionately affected. Panelists will discuss an array of responses, such as the Loss and Damage Fund, new technologies, social initiatives, and policy interventions that aim to mitigate these impacts.

Key Objectives

  • Highlight Critical Ocean Challenges: Bring attention to the urgent issues facing ocean ecosystems.
  • Focus on Vulnerable Communities: Address the unique challenges faced by coastal communities and SIDS, who are on the frontlines of oceanic crises.
  • Explore Innovative Solutions: Examine non-traditional responses, including policy actions, technological advancements, and social and financial initiatives.

Expected Outcomes

  • Insights into Novel Solutions: Participants will gain awareness of innovative and non-traditional approaches to address the most urgent threats to marine ecosystems and protect ocean health.
