Dear colleagues,
This is the Alliance of Excellence for Research and Innovation on Αephoria | AE4RIA Press Release on the 27th UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP27) that took place 7th-18th of November in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt. AE4RIA’s leading members, ReSEES Laboratory at Athens University of Economics and Business, the Sustainable Development Unit and EIT Climate-KIC Greece Hub at “Athena” Research and Innovation Center, SDSN Global Climate Hub and SDSN Europe and the European Association of Environmental and Resource Economists (EAERE) had a strong presence during COP27.
Each year the Conference of the Parties (COP), is held to monitor and review the implementation of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. At COP21 in 2015 in Paris, an agreement was signed by 196 countries to limit the increase in the average global temperature to close to +1.5°C compared to pre-industrial levels, by 2050. With the commitments of the countries, just before COP26 2021 in Glasgow, we were in an orbit of +3.5°C, while a year later, just before COP27 held November 6 – 18 in Egypt we have managed to be on track for +2.5°C. Therefore, significant additional steps must be taken.
The main objectives of the COP27, as announced by UN General Secretary, António Guterres, were to accelerate global climate action, to scale up the adaptation efforts of the most vulnerable states, and to stimulate financial flows to implement transformations in innovation and “clean technologies”.
