On 28 May 2025, Prof. Phoebe Koundouri spoke at the UniCredit Longevity Economic Forum in Milan, alongside Nobel Laureates in Economic Sciences Robert C. Merton and Michael Spence, as part of a distinguished discussion on the economic, social, and institutional dimensions of longevity.
In her presentation on “SDGs-Based Transformation to Support Longevity,” Prof. Koundouri shared findings from a recent study examining how the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) can serve as a strategic framework for promoting not only longer lives, but better lives—lived with dignity, autonomy, and inclusion.
The research evaluates the relationship between progress on the SDGs and key longevity indicators across the EU-27. The study finds strong associations between improved longevity outcomes—such as life expectancy, healthy life years, and self-perceived health—and SDGs focused on health, education, equality, and partnerships. These findings underscore the potential of the SDG framework to guide coherent, cross-sectoral policies that support sustainable and inclusive ageing.
