The EU Ocean Accounts Workshop in Brussels

Prof. Phoebe Koundouri was honored to participate in the EU Ocean Accounts Workshop held in Brussels on 9–10 April 2025, organized under the EU Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD). This high-level workshop brought together policymakers, researchers, and practitioners from across Europe and beyond to advance ocean accounting as a tool for sustainable marine governance. Discussions focused on the current state of ocean accounts in the EU, key implementation challenges, and lessons from international initiatives.

During Session 6: Experiences with Ocean Accounts: Countries, Prof. Koundouri presented on the Valuation of Marine Ecosystem Services, highlighting its importance in enhancing evidence-based decision-making and promoting the sustainable use of marine resources.

This paper explores how marine ecosystem services are valued across the EU and their relevance to achieving the SDGs, especially SDG 14: Life Below Water, emphasizing the need to integrate these values into policy and planning.
