COP29 Panel: “Skills for the Transition” – Greek Pavilion, Blue Zone

At the Greek Pavilion, leading experts explored the pivotal role of green and digital skills in advancing the EU’s Twin Transition towards a climate-neutral and digital economy by 2050. Discussions emphasized the importance of developing robust AI- driven digital infrastructures to support model and data integration, as well as data harmonization, management, and visualization. The report “Twin Skills for the Twin Transition: Defining Green Digital Skills and Jobs,” by AE4RIA and Huawei and launched at COP28 UAE, underscores a commitment to equipping the workforce with future-ready skills—85% of which pertain to jobs not yet invented. The panel, organized by AE4RIA and the SDSN Global Climate Hub, addressed topics such as mainstreaming green and digital skills, identifying workforce gaps, and tracking skill progress to support a sustainable future.

Moderated by Prof. Yannis Ioannidis, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens; President of the Association for Computing Machinery, the panel featured distinguished speakers, including Prof. Phoebe Koundouri, President, World Council of Environmental and Resource Economists Associations; Chair, SDSN Global Climate Hub; Director AE4RIA; Massamba Thioye, Project Executive, UNFCCC Global Innovation Hub, Giorgia Epicoco, Head of EU Sustainability & Industrial Policy, Huawei, and Dr. Binbin Wang, Founder, Climate Future Global Innovation Lab, and Associate Dean, Institute of Carbon Neutrality, Peking University.
